Importance du sillet

A moins d’avoir des étaux à la place des doigts, le sillet est important pour le son sur tout le manche. Ca a l’air assez répandu de dire que c’est important que pour les cordes à vide, mais c’est faux. Ca reviendrait à dire que les sillets durs sont mauvais car il y aurait un déséquillibre entre notes frettées et notes à vide, les notes à vide sonneraient mieux que les notes frettées. Dans le cas des accords en bas du manche, vous conviendrez que c’est pas pratique. 
Faites un expérience très simple: Jouez un accord barré au milieu du manche, genre 5ème ou 7ème case et ensuite touchez les cordes entre votre main gauche et le sillet avec la paume de votre main droite. Elles vibrent, eh oui.
Un sillet plutôt tendre va amortir pas mal de cette vibration, et donc offrir un sustain moins long qu’un sillet dur.
L’inclinaison des encoches est aussi très importante: Il faut que la corde soit ‘portée’ tout le long de l’encoche. Si elle est juste posée sur la tranche, ça donne des harmoniques bizarres sur certaines notes parce que les cordes entre le sillet et les mécaniques vibrent de trop.
Et comme chacun sait que la main gauche doit appuyer le moins fort possible pour fretter, même en mode bourrin, il est important que la corde soit tenue très rigidement au niveau du sillet, sinon une partie des vibrations est amortie.
C’est pour ça qu’il existe différentes matières pour un sillet. os, ivoire, laiton, ivoire fossilisé, différentes matières synthétiques: Vulgaire plastique dur, ivoire synthétique ou polymère qui favorise le glissement des guitares à vibrato, avec un son plus chaud que le plastique.
On trouve du vieil ivoire d’avant l’interdiction de la chasse, ou des défense de mammouth fossilisées. Ca donne un son plus plein, plus chaud avec bien entendu plus de sustain.
